When should discharge education begin in the PACU?

Discharge education should begin as soon as the patient is stable and able to participate in learning. Starting this process early is crucial because it allows the patient to retain information while still under the influence of anesthesia. Additionally, patients often have better engagement and understanding of their post-operative care instructions when they are at a point where they can actively participate.

This early intervention can help reinforce important information about pain management, activity restrictions, medication instructions, and follow-up care. In contrast, waiting until the patient is fully discharged or delaying education until all documentation is completed would not facilitate effective knowledge retention.
